Soundslides is fantastic for visual storytelling. Almost all photos were snapped using a Nikon D90. Yes, on a manual setting. Did I have any prior photography experience before these assignments? Not so much. Regardless of proficiency, good snapshots require a natural eye. That, I have.

Make sure to select "captions" for the full viewing experience. The 25th annual Richmond PRIDE festival was a lively, colorful place to shoot photos for this VJ (Visual Journalism) assignment. Although it was a dreary day, the rain didn't stop the characters or smiles from making an appearance. The song choice, by Queen, is indeed a playful selection. Enjoy!

The ROSMY 40K was a month long fundraising campaign done primarily online, with the exception of the final homestretch. Two public events rallied support for the ROSMY 40K, which generated funds and fostered community. "Perfect 10," a date auction, was held at Babes. "Eat out for ROSMY," was held at the Galaxy Diner. Both locations are in Carytown. ROSMY headquarters are at 2311 Westwood Avenue, in Richmond, Virginia. ROSMY will reach their $40,000 total and qualify for a match grant from the local Mary Morton Parsons foundation.

This soundslide was my first. My amor for soundslides happened when I got the musket sound lined up with the photo of it firing. I submitted this as part of a final package my first semester in school. The package requirements were that I select a culture in Richmond and feature it through a soundslide, podcast, and print article. The biggest challenge of this assignment wasn't to survive the 90 degree August heat. Rows of empty chairs sat forlornly behind me as I snapped photos of the few people in attendance at the first annual Richmond Multicultural Day. The photos make use of the limited action that was happening, while the print article examines the costs and benefits of festivals versus fundraisers. Read "Always a price" by clicking the link.

This was produced in a few hours for the final exam in Online Journalism I. It was a field project assigned the morning we came to class, without prior knowledge. Dawn Van Ness was my partner. She worked on the print and photography angles, and I covered the podcast and soundslides production. We made it through the day, though the pressure was on.
